Swedish and Danish triumphs in 2022 NEVZA Beach Gothenburg

The interest was overwhelming when NEVZA Beach Gothenburg was opened for registration after a three years pandemic interruption. The competition management increased the tournament from sixteen to twenty teams in order to give as many teams as possible the opportunity to compete on an international level. Teams from Denmark, England, Finland, Norway and Sweden were fighting for glory, price money and international ranking points.

Forty of Northern Europes best beach volleyball teams (20 women, 20 men) were gathered in the sand in Beach Center Gothenburg, the worlds greatest beach volleyball hall, to fight for glory, price money and international ranking points. Sweden dominated on the Womens’ side, with gold, silver and bronze, while Denmark won the Mens’ tournament before Finland and Sweden.

For the Women, the twin sisters Sanna and Tina Thurin were favourites, before teams from England and Norway. Playing at home was a possible reason that the Thurin sisters got company of several Swedish teams on the final day. The teams ranked 1-4 were only Swedish. In the quarter finals, the Norwegian pair Kaelo/Windelstad couldn’t match the winners Thurin/Thurin, while the silver medalists Malmström/Ribom eliminated the last Danish team Kramer/Bak.

On theMen’s side, the different nations’ teams were more even. The Swedish top teams, the newly composed pair Appelgren/Hölting Nilsson and Björklund/Annerstedt did not really find the winning track in thier respective semifinals. Appelgren/Hölting Nilsson were strongest in the bronze match. The Danish team Trans/Brinck made it to the final against Piippo/Topio, Finland. The danes, who eliminated the bronze medallists Appelgren/Hölting Nilsson, were also strongest in the final and they could go home with the trophy and the price check of 800 Euro.

Find out about the teams on the CEV Zonal event page, NEVZA Gothenburg 2022.
